Volunteering with Engage Befriending

Join our team and become a Volunteer Befriender! Visiting someone once a week for a chat can make a real difference in reducing loneliness, and is a great opportunity to meet people and contribute to the life of your community.

There are three main ways in which you can get involved...

Volunteer Befriender:

Befriending involves visiting an isolated older people in their home once a week or fortnight for a period of at least 6 months. If the Engage Friend has sufficient mobility we might take them out locally, e.g. for a short walk or visit to a coffee shop. We visit throughout the Reading Borough and will match volunteers with someone who lives in their local area.

Volunteer Administrator:

Could you use your administrative skills to support the Regional Coordinators in their role? This may include contacting volunteers by telephone and email, collating information for reviews.

Or perhaps you could assist in organising volunteer socials, or helping with the website or newsletter?

Volunteer Fundraiser:

Help raise awareness and funds by hosting a local coffee morning or holding a sponsored event. If you have ideas and enthusiasm we would love to hear from you!

Recent research suggests that volunteers are just as likely to benefit as those they help, with 90% reporting personal satisfaction through volunteering. You could make a huge difference in someone's life breaking down social isolation and helping to build our local community.
